A child who... has traced over the
sandpaper letters again and again for many days – perfecting something in himself
– will one day consciously set out to compose words with the movable letters.
First, the child creates by repetition a faculty inside himself; and then he
creates something with it, outside himself. This is an experience which gives
him a new kind of joy, the conscious joy of the creator.
